BALA:
A CENTRE FOR SPORTS OF ALL KINDS

If your preference centres around chasing a little white ball through a meadow, you'll want to visit the new Beaver Run Golf Course right in the town limits of Bala; and just 10 minutes north of the town, at Glen Orchard, you can practice your swing at Hunter's Glen Driving Range. Sun and water worshipers will find endless swimming holes, and at the sandy beach down at Jaspen Park they'll even teach your kids to swim. Water skiers in your group, will find Bush's Ski School, a world class waterski centre just 2 minutes north of Bala. It's the summer home of Ryan Bush, a name that many associate with championship water skiing in North America. If you love water skiing but want to keep dry, every week you'll be in the crowd at the free Tuesday night professional ski show at Windsor Park; a Bala tradition for over 20 years. Oh! And don't forget… the Bala Aquatic Association Regatta takes place on Civic Holiday weekend in August right at the town dock in Bala, just across from the famous Don's Bakery! The Regatta is an event that is approaching the century mark in the town. On Saturday afternoons, as well as some Sundays, the sailors in your crowd can try their hand at competitively sailing their albacore and laser craft with the Bala Sailing Club out on the Bay.

Located just north of Bala, Bush's Ski School is the summer home of Ryan
Bush and his parents who provide world class water skiing instruction.

In the summer, the ice is taken out of the arena but then it becomes a great roller skating, roller blade rink and for a reasonable fee it can be rented for indoor soccer, kids parties and family get togethers.

When the times comes to put away your boat, you don't have to sit around wishing for something to do. You can come out to the Bala Curling Club, an institution that has been active in this town for over 50 years. The rink is located on Elm Street and has two sheets of ice. In winter break the club offers a kid's program, and during the year, the club holds special bonspiels as well as the regular curling program. There are also women's and men's hockey clubs.

Bala is home to the oldest officially registered female hockey player, Mickey Walker who is now in her 80th. year and still skating! Mickey Walker

We're proud of the athletic achievements of our people and we want everyone to know about them!

FISHING

If fishing's your game there are enough fishing holes in the Bala area to keep you busy for a dozen summers. From the Bala waterfront you can travel down the lake and out into the main body of Lake Muskoka where you can cruise all day in and out of inlets and quiet fishing holes too numerous to count. There are several places in Bala where you can buy bait, and a licence, as well as rent a canoe or a small fishing boat. There are also two marinas right in the town where you can buy everything it takes to get you out to those great fishing holes.

SCUBA DIVING

Instead of playing about on the surface of the water, some folks prefer to stay under it… for long periods. If you fit in this category, Bala Falls is the place for you. In all seasons, you'll find the area around the Moon River a great place to explore. There are all sorts of little treasures and artifacts to be found in the area and you can actually go down in some areas for close to 100 feet. (Watch your depth gauge though!)

INDOOR SPORTS

Not everyone wants to go outside for his or her sports! For the indoor sports buffs, you'll want to attend the Monday night Euchre at the Bala Legion, Monday night Lion's Bingo at the Bala Community Centre, and Wednesday night Bingo at the Torrance Community Centre, just 4 km south of Bala. You can even visit the Senior's Drop in Centre at Bala United Church where they take their card games pretty seriously!
